The Iranian rial has plunged to a new record low against the U.S. dollar after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei rejected negotiations with Washington. On Sunday, the rial was trading at 913,650 per U.S. dollar, a sharp decline from 891,000 the previous day. The currency has been depreciating since President Masoud Pezeshkian’s reformist government took office last July. The situation worsened this week after Khamenei dismissed the possibility of nuclear-related talks with the U.S., despite former President Donald Trump’s interest in negotiations. Analysts predict the rial may soon hit 1 million per dollar. Inflation in Iran has reached nearly 50%, pushing over a third of the population below the poverty line, as the economic crisis deepens.
