South Korea has suspended new downloads of the Chinese AI chatbot DeepSeek, citing data privacy concerns. The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) announced that the app will remain unavailable until it complies with local laws. DeepSeek had surged in popularity, topping app store rankings and attracting over a million users. The suspension follows bans on government employees using the app. While existing users can still access it, DeepSeek has acknowledged regulatory gaps and appointed legal representatives in South Korea. The chatbot faces similar restrictions globally, with Italy, Taiwan, and Australia imposing bans. In the US, lawmakers are pushing for a federal ban. Meanwhile, China insists it upholds data privacy and does not force companies to violate laws.
