A hacker executed a massive cyber attack on Bybit, a Dubai-based cryptocurrency exchange, stealing $1.5 billion worth of digital currencies, marking one of the largest online heists in history. The hacker transferred popular cryptocurrency Ethereum to an unknown address during routine transactions. While Bybit confirmed the breach, it assured customers that their funds remained safe and operational. The CEO, Ben Zhou, mentioned that the stolen funds may not be recovered, but compensation could be provided. This incident surpasses previous record thefts, including the $620 million stolen from Ronin Network in 2022. Following the breach, Ethereum’s market value dropped by nearly 4%.
