UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Bangladesh’s interim Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, will visit the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar on March 14. They will meet with community leaders, inspect humanitarian aid programs, and conclude their visit by sharing Iftar with over 100,000 Rohingya refugees. The visit has raised hopes among the refugees, who seek UN intervention for safe repatriation to Myanmar. Community leaders plan to urge Guterres to establish a secure zone in Rakhine State and address the recent reduction in food aid. Security has been tightened for the high-profile visit. This marks Guterres’ second visit to the camps since 2018, reinforcing global attention on the ongoing crisis. The UN delegation will also review the worsening conditions in the camps, including food shortages and restricted access to education and healthcare.
