Nahid Islam, the current Information Advisor of the interim government, is set to resign this month to lead a new political party formed by student leaders of the July uprising. The party, expected to be launched in February from the Central Shaheed Minar, aims for a major political shift. Nahid, a key figure in last year’s anti-discrimination student movement, is seen as the natural leader due to his role in the one-point demand that led to Sheikh Hasina’s removal. The party is finalizing leadership and structure, with former student leader Akhtar Hossain likely to be the second-in-command. Meanwhile, the interim government, led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, is preparing for national elections in December, with discussions ongoing about holding local elections beforehand.
