BJP Takes Control of Delhi as Rekha Gupta Sworn in as Chief Minister

Rekha Gupta of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been sworn in as Delhi’s chief minister after a landslide victory, ending the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) decade-long rule. This marks BJP’s first control of the capital’s legislature since 1998. Gupta, a lawyer and former student leader, was selected by party members and took the oath amid cheering supporters. The election loss is a major setback for AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, who has faced corruption allegations. The win strengthens Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s position ahead of upcoming national challenges. Gupta now faces pressing issues, including Delhi’s severe air pollution crisis, which continues to threaten public health with little concrete action from political leaders.
