Lake Natron, located in Tanzania, is a unique saltwater lake where animals, including birds, turn into stone-like statues upon contact with its waters. The lake’s water contains high concentrations of natron and trona, causing a pH level close to 12, which is highly caustic. When animals enter the lake, their bodies undergo a transformation, becoming covered in salt and eventually turning to solid stone. The lake’s red hue is caused by these chemicals. Despite the deadly conditions, flamingos thrive in the area, remaining unaffected by the toxic water, a phenomenon that still puzzles scientists. This eerie lake was discovered by photographer Nick Brandt in 2013.
