The death toll from bootleg alcohol in Turkey has reached 152 since the beginning of the year, with many fatalities linked to methanol contamination, which causes severe poisoning, blindness, liver damage, and death. Authorities report that 983 people have been detained for producing and selling counterfeit alcohol, with over 445,000 liters seized. The surge in deaths comes amid rising taxes on alcoholic beverages, prompting a spike in illegal alcohol production. The cost of legal alcohol has also increased significantly, with a bottle of raki now costing around $35, a steep price in a country with a minimum wage of $600 per month.
