IFAB Introduces New Rule: Goalkeepers Penalized for Holding Ball Over 8 Seconds

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has introduced a new rule to prevent time-wasting by goalkeepers. Starting next season, if a goalkeeper holds the ball for more than 8 seconds, the opposing team will be awarded a corner kick. Previously, referees could only give an indirect free kick for time-wasting, but this rule was rarely enforced.Additionally, only team captains will be allowed to communicate with referees in special on-field situations to enhance cooperation. A new rule also grants ball possession to the team that last had it if play is stopped temporarily. Furthermore, if an off-field player or staff member touches the ball before leaving the field, the opposing team will receive a free kick. Changes in VAR rules will allow referees to explain complex decisions on the field starting June 14.
