Tourism Ban Revives St. Martin’s Ecosystem, But Locals Struggle to Survive

With the absence of tourists, St. Martin’s Island is witnessing a revival of its natural beauty and biodiversity. The island’s beaches, once crowded with visitors, are now cleaner, allowing marine life, including coral and sea turtles, to thrive. The government restricted tourism for ten months starting January 31, reducing environmental pollution and aiding the island’s ecosystem. However, this has severely impacted the livelihoods of locals dependent on tourism. Business owners and daily wage earners are struggling financially, with limited income sources. Additionally, poor fish catches have worsened the situation for fishermen. Locals urge the government to provide alternative income opportunities. The district administration acknowledges the concerns and is exploring potential solutions, such as promoting dried fish and other traditional trades, but no major initiatives have been implemented yet.
