Myanmar has identified 180,000 Rohingya refugees currently in Bangladesh as eligible for repatriation in the first phase, according to an official Facebook post from the Myanmar government on April 4. The announcement came during a meeting between Myanmar’s Deputy Prime Minister U Than Swe and Dr. Khalilur Rahman, a senior representative of Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, on the sidelines of the 6th BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok. Myanmar confirmed that out of the 800,000 registered Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, 180,000 are deemed suitable for return. Verification for another 70,000 is still pending, while the process for the remaining 550,000 will be expedited. The meeting also included Bangladesh’s expression of condolences over Myanmar’s recent earthquake and a commitment to continue humanitarian aid, including rescue and medical support teams recently deployed to Myanmar.
