Watermelon Demand Surges During Ramadan Despite High Prices in Bagerhat

The demand for watermelons has significantly increased in Bagerhat, particularly for iftar during Ramadan. Markets in Kachua’s Signboard area are bustling with fresh watermelon sales, with prices at Tk 50 per kg. Vendors report strong sales, offering the fruit both by weight and whole. Despite high prices, shoppers eagerly purchase watermelons, with sizes ranging from 3kg to 7.5kg. Most of the supply comes from Barishal, and the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) confirms a good harvest. Various hybrid varieties, including Dragon King and Big Family, have been cultivated. Officials expect prices to drop as more watermelons reach the market.
